Breezy Tourney Raises $1,850 for Books for Kids

Breezy Point Resort, National Carpet Brokers and several other area companies teamed up last week to raise $1,850 for Fun Books for Kids, Inc.

The not-for-profit organization promotes reading among the children of families in the Pequot Lakes School District.

The funds were raised at the Breezy Point/National Carpet Brokers PGA Pro-Am Tournament held Tuesday, July 28 at the resort's Whitebirch Golf Course.

"Learning to read well is the cornerstone of a successful life," says Bob Spizzo, the resort's owner. "We are proud to be a part of this fundraising effort. I want to thank Big Al and his National Carpet Brokers for co-sponsoring our first pro-am, as well as every other business and individual who contributed to Fun Books for Kids."

Bill Israelson of the Neighborhood Par 3 in Staples and Scott Spence of Burl Oaks Golf and Country Club shot a pair of four-under 68s to tie for first in medal play.

Spence and his amateur team took first in the best two-balls-of-four team competition with a 124.

Big Al Robinson, owner of National Carpet Brokers of Breezy Point, contributed $2,500 toward the prize fund, and several other area companies purchased sponsorships for $100 to $300 (see list attached).

Tony Rohlik of Lost Spur Golf & Country Club in Eagan finished third in medal play with a 71, while Paul Gandrud and Heikke Nielsen tied for fourth and fifth with 73s.

Ten Minnesota pros and their amateur partners competed in the 18-hole event, the first ever pro-am tournament at Whitebirch, now in its fifth year of operation.

The pro at Golf Galaxy, Fred Habermel, and his amateur team finished second in team competition with a 125, followed by Israelson's group at 127. Israelson is a former PGA tour player and Minnesota PGA Player of the Year.

The teams led by Nielson, a pro at The Preserve, and Gandrud, representing Pebble Lake Golf and Country Club in Fergus Falls, tied for fourth and fifth at 132.

One of the highlights of the tournament, however, occurred in the longest drive contest, sponsored by tournament organizers as an additional fundraiser for Fun Books for Kids, when Rohlik drove his ball 416 yards off the practice tee.

The Sponsors Challenge was won by the three-person team from Tanner Motors of Brainerd with a three-under-par 69.
